Rules
Salmon and Sea Trout Angling Regulations
The sea trout is the migratory form of the brown trout, spending its adult life at sea before returning to freshwater rivers to spawn. In County Cork, sea trout can be intercepted in the tidal reaches of rivers, estuaries and sheltered harbours as they stage before moving upstream. Ballydehob and similar sheltered tidal inlets in West Cork are known gathering points, and fish can be found holding in estuary channels and tidal pools on the summer and autumn tides. They are distinguished from salmon by their smaller size and spotted appearance — the spots tend to be small, dark and often X-shaped or cross-shaped, and the fish generally carry fewer of them than a salmon of similar size. The adipose fin and slightly forked tail are useful supporting features.
Spinning with small metal lures is the primary method for sea trout encountered in the tidal zone. Light spinning gear, a selection of small toby-style or bar spoons in silver or gold, and a methodical approach working the edges of channels and pools on the incoming tide will all improve the chances of a take. Sea trout can be fast and aggressive strikers, and the fishing can be excellent when fish are fresh-run and active.
It is essential that anglers are aware of the regulatory status of sea trout before fishing. Sea trout is a licence-regulated species in Ireland: a valid inland fishing licence issued by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) is required, and a closed season applies. Regulations, season dates and any local by-laws must be checked directly with IFI before fishing for sea trout anywhere in Cork. Fishing without the correct licence or outside the permitted season is an offence.
