The River Lee is Cork’s defining urban river, dividing the city centre on its way to Cork Harbour. Above the city, the approximately nine-mile stretch between Cork and the ESB Inniscarra dam supports a recognised salmon and grilse fishery, managed by ESB under a permit system.
The Fishery
The Lee salmon run is considered fair rather than exceptional by Irish river standards, but the grilse run can be very good in the right conditions — dependent on adequate summer water levels and spate events to encourage fish to move. The proximity of the fishery to Cork City makes it one of the most accessible salmon rivers in Munster.
The published season runs February to September, with the best fishing from June to September when grilse are running. As with all Irish salmon rivers, the Lee’s status (open, catch-and-release, or closed) is set annually by IFI and must be verified before fishing. The ESB management and the dam above mean water flows are partly regulated — a useful characteristic when natural rainfall is low.
The Lee also holds sea trout, which enter the lower reaches and tidal sections during summer, and wild brown trout in the main channel and its tributaries.
Permit and Access
An ESB permit is required to fish the Lee salmon fishery — this is separate from the State salmon rod licence, which is also required. Contact ESB Fisheries directly for current permit costs, availability and beat details. The Lee Fields corridor in the city provides accessible bank access on some sections.
Methods
Fly fishing is the principal method on the Lee, with a single-handed rod of 9–10 ft in a #6–#8 line appropriate for most of the river. Wet fly and shrimp patterns are popular for salmon and grilse, while an intermediate or sinking line helps on deeper, slower pools.
Spinning is effective in higher water with a Toby, Flying C or bar spoon in the 15–25 g range.
Regulations
A State salmon and sea trout rod licence from IFI is required in addition to the ESB fishery permit. Gill tags must be applied to any retained fish and a logbook must be kept (if the fishery is open for harvest — verify the current river status). As of 2026, the Munster Blackwater is catch-and-release only; check the Lee’s current status separately at https://store.fishinginireland.info/salmon-fishing-regulations/.
See the Salmon and Sea Trout Regulations page for a full explanation of the annual framework.
