Sea Trout and Salmon Licence
Fishing for sea trout and Atlantic salmon requires a State rod licence in Ireland. Sea trout fishing is also prohibited from 13 October to 31 December each year.
Applies to: Atlantic SalmonSea Trout
Unlike general sea angling, which in Ireland does not currently require a licence for most species, fishing for sea trout (Salmo trutta) or Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) requires a valid State rod licence issued by Inland Fisheries Ireland. Fishing for either species without a current licence is an offence under Irish fisheries law.
Sea trout fishing is subject to a closed season running from 13 October to 31 December each year. During this period it is prohibited to fish for sea trout regardless of whether a licence is held. Anglers should be aware that this closed season applies even if sea trout are encountered incidentally while targeting other species.
Salmon fishing is also subject to a licence requirement and, in addition, carries mandatory catch reporting obligations. The rules governing salmon fishing โ including any river-specific bye-laws โ should be confirmed with Inland Fisheries Ireland before fishing.
Licences can be obtained through IFI and authorised licence distributors. For current licence fees, availability, and any additional conditions or bye-laws, visit:

It is worth noting that sea trout do occasionally enter Cork harbour marks, estuaries, and surf beaches, particularly in late summer and autumn. The licence requirement applies regardless of where in Irish waters a sea trout is caught โ coastal or otherwise. When fishing areas where sea trout are a possibility, anglers should ensure they are appropriately licensed or be prepared to return any sea trout immediately without retaining them.
