Galley Head

West Cork · shore

⚠ Access & safety: A fair-weather rock mark only. Wet rocks are extremely slippery and a swell that appears manageable from above can sweep the lower ledges. Never fish this mark in any significant swell or in wind from a southerly or westerly quarter. Check the marine forecast before visiting. This mark is not suitable for beginners or lone anglers. Approached via the Galley Head road south of Dunmanway direction. Walk across farmland to the headland. Wear suitable footwear. Gate access — follow the country code.

When to go

Summer (May–September) · High water

Galley Head is one of West Cork’s most atmospheric rock marks, the old lighthouse standing sentinel above a series of exposed ledges that drop into deep, clear Atlantic water. The outer points are the key positions, and it is here that spinning with metal lures or rubber eels brings pollack and mackerel through the summer months as fish push up from the depths to follow baitfish around the headland. High water is the essential tidal state — it lifts fish within range of positions that would be fishing over bare rock on the ebb and concentrates both predators and prey around the submerged reef edges. Float fishing tight to the rock faces with crab or ragworm fished slowly down accounts for ballan wrasse, which can run to a good size on this wild Atlantic ground.

Safety is not optional at Galley Head. This is a serious rock mark that must be treated with the same caution as any exposed headland on the Irish south-west coast. Wet rocks are treacherously slippery — suitable footwear with grip is essential, and felt-soled waders are strongly advised on the lower ledges. More critically, Atlantic swells that appear moderate from above can surge suddenly up the rock faces with little warning, and what looks like calm water from the cliff path can be a very different proposition at sea level. This mark should never be fished in any swell, or in wind from a southerly or westerly quarter. Check a dedicated marine forecast before every visit and, if in doubt, do not go down. Galley Head is a mark for experienced rock anglers only, and never for lone anglers.

When conditions are settled and the mark is fishing safely, it rewards patience. Work lures across the tide through the high-water period, vary the retrieve to find where the fish are holding, and be prepared to explore different positions along the ledges. The ballan wrasse fishing in particular can be excellent when the sea is calm and clear — a light float rig with a fresh peeler crab dropped close to the base of the rock faces will account for fish through the summer months.
