When to go
Spring–autumn (April–October) · Flooding tide for bass; high water for spinning from rock
Ballycroneen offers two distinct fishing environments within a single stretch of East Cork coastline. The main sandy beach is a reliable bass and flounder mark through spring and autumn, with peeler crab and worm baits fished on the flooding tide accounting for most fish. Bass move along the surf tables as the water rises, and a well-presented crab bait on a running leger will cover the productive zone; flounder are a consistent bonus throughout the colder months on standard bottom rigs. Dogfish are a common after-dark addition across both the beach and the rock sections, taking mackerel strip fished on the bottom. Check current bass regulations with IFI before retaining any bass.
The eastern rocky end of the beach opens up a different range of species and approaches. From the elevated rock positions at high water, spinning with metal lures or rubber eels produces mackerel and pollack through summer — the rocks access deeper water quickly and fish can be encountered close in when the tide is right. Lower down, ballan wrasse work tight to the kelp margins and respond to ragworm or crab fished on a float or a light feeder rig; conger eels occupy the deeper rock crevices and are best targeted after dark with mackerel bait fished hard on the bottom. Anglers should restrict visits to the rock section to settled, calm conditions — swell and wet surfaces make the eastern rocks genuinely dangerous, and this part of the mark is not appropriate for those without experience of rock fishing.
