Clonakilty Estuary

West Cork · shore · ⭐ Beginner-friendly

⚠ Access & safety: Estuary mudflats and banks can be deceptively soft — stay on firm ground and do not wade onto unknown mud. Tidal range can be significant; allow time to retreat before the flood cuts off your position. Access from the N71 road; estuary edges accessible on foot.

When to go

June–November; bass September–November · Flooding tide

The Clonakilty estuary is a superb all-round mark. Bass are the main target from September to November, with live sandeel on the flooding tide the primary method. Large thick-lipped grey mullet are present through summer — approached with a small float and fine tackle. Flounder are taken on worm baits over the sandy-muddy bottom, especially in autumn and winter. The estuary has also produced record-class gilthead bream.
